Wye Valley Walks Crowdfund.

About the project

By supporting the Wye Valley Walks project you get twenty-five films of great walks along the River Wye along with an accompanying book. Each film will be available to stream, for free, in stunning 4K via the WyeValley.TV website and will be accompanied by a downloadable file for GPS mapping devices and Smart Phones, a printable PDF version of the route, as well as being featured in the book, which will contain instructions, maps and some stunning photographs.

The walks will be scattered liberally along the 134 mile length of the river, from its source at Plynlimon in the Cambrian Mountains to its confluence with the river Severn near Chepstow, on the border of England and Wales.

The variety of terrain means that our walks will vary in difficulty from a gentle stroll to climbs of several hundred metres.

Whether you want inspiration and to take these walks yourself or you would just like to see some films about a fascinating and stunning part of the country, Wye Valley Walks is a project we think you should get behind.

Our goal is to raise £37,500. That is just £1500 per walk.

Check out the rewards like bookmarks and postcards, T Shirts, photographic prints and copies of the book. Once production is underway our supporters will receive regular update videos so that they can see what their donation has achieved.

Because this is such a worthwhile project we are sure you will want to give it your support by making your donation on the right of this page.

If you want to encourage others to do the same you can share it with your friends and family using the social media links.

Thanks for your support.

About Us

Wye Valley TV is produced by two filmmakers, Ian Newton and Jo Barker.  We are very lucky in that we both really love our work and the place we live.  Jo loves books, both reading and writing and Ian likes to sing and play guitar. We both love walking, canoeing, swimming and cycling, so we really are in the right place geographically.

We have been producing video for several years, for both corporate clients and Television.  We relocated to the Wye Valley in 2013 and fell in love with the place.

We found ourselves speaking to business owners in the Wye Valley and we kept hearing the same thing.  No-one was promoting the whole length of the River Wye.

The River Wye is in an odd situation in that not only does it travel through three separate counties in two different countries but for some of its length it is the border between two counties and countries.  The result is that it gets ignored when it comes to promotion because if you promote something on your border there is a risk that visitors may cross that border.

So to cut a long story short in 2016 we took a leap of faith and invested our time and savings into starting WyeValley.TV.  We combined our two passions and started making films about the Wye Valley.  We have been up and running for just over a year at this point, and as you can see we have built up a good number of films. A number which will continue to grow.  The River Wye offers an almost endless supply of beautiful places and interesting topics to make films about.

We have set up our website so that our films can be embedded into local businesses websites so that if for example, there is a film near a B&B, they can embed that film into their website and show prospective clients what’s nearby. It costs the B&B nothing.

We don’t charge for these services. All we ask in return for the work we do is for a donation to our Crowdfunding Campaign.  We are an incredibly cost effective way to promote the region and rely entirely on businesses and individuals to fund our work.

Here is an example of the sort of films we will be producing.

Q: How do I make my contribution?

A: Click on the button that says "Click Here To Donate" with the amount you want to donate.  You can alter the amount in the box up but not down, so be sure to select the right amount for the reward you want to claim.  If you don't want a reward then select the "Donate What You Want" button.

Q: When will I get my rewards?

A: Some rewards will come while the project is ongoing and some will arrive with you upon completion. We can't really send you a copy of the book when we haven't taken the photos yet now can we? I mean, all the pages would be blank.

Q: How long will the videos take to make?

A: Depending on the length of the walk, each walk could take anything from a week to three weeks to research, film, and edit.

To give you a flavour of our process, and to give you an idea of the work we put into our content, here is a break down of how we produce our films.

  • We first have to plan our route. This takes a day or two to research the area so that we make sure we make our walks as interesting as possible.
  • Once our route is finalised we do a practice walk to make sure that the walk is possible, to see what the pitfalls are, and to make sure that we can get to the places we’d like to visit.
  • Once we have scouted out the area the research element comes in. We find out the most interesting facts about the area we will be walking through and generate a script. A script generally takes us 24 to 48 hours, depending on the amount of history that the area has.
  • Once the script is written and finalised we can finally film the walk in stunning 4k. The filming process itself may take a couple of days because we have to stop and film our B-Roll and pieces to camera.
  • With the footage shot then begins the post production. We edit together the footage, colour it, record and edit the music, and create any graphics that might be needed. Whilst one of us edits, the other creates the music, which cuts down the amount of production time.
  • When the film is complete we can then start to get together the information for the downloadable walking guides, create the map, set aside some photographs for rewards, before beginning the next film.
  • Whilst all this is going on we will still be going out into the Wye and filming other films for you to enjoy, and the funding of the walks videos will enable us to continue.

As you can see the process is fairly labour intensive, but we at Wye Valley TV have had plenty of experience in creating films, and as you can see from the video of the walk below, we are more than capable of delivering quality content for you.

Q: Where will the funds go?

A: We are a two man team, well- one man and one woman, and as a result we are able to keep our running costs very low. However we do still need to run.
Funding these walks will enable us to keep filming regularly.

The proceeds of this campaign will partly go towards creating the rewards, and the printing of the books. The rest will cover the cost of production.

Q: Pitfalls

A: With any major project there will be some pitfalls. Ours are based on the weather. We are dependent on good weather to film, but when we are not filming we still have plenty to do, so we won’t fall behind.

We have been filming for many years now, so we know we will be able to deliver on our promises, and we feel our films demonstrate what we are capable of.

As for the rewards we already know who the printers will be, and we have used them before, so we can assure you that your rewards will be the best quality possible.

We will create videos to keep you updated, so you are kept in the loop.
