An Introduction to Hay on Wye

The quaint village of Hay on Wye is a wonderful place to visit.

Hay on Wye is a small town in Brecknockshire in Wales famous for its numerous second hand bookshops and its annual literary festival.

It sits in beautiful countryside just north of the Black Mountains. Hay boasts two Norman castles dating back to roughly 1070.

The narrow streets offer a pleasant atmosphere of calm and are lined with independent shops and eateries.

The town was transformed by the work of one man, Richard Booth OBE, the self proclaimed King of Hay; an entrepreneur who came up with the idea of buying second hand books in bulk and then selling them on. ┬áHis original bookshop is still in the town although it is under new ownership. He meanwhile toyed with ideas of retiring to Germany but in the end opened a new bookshop aptly called ‘The King of Hay’.

Marvellous PR for Booth’s bookshop and Hay Castle Trust, I wonder who sponsored this video. What a shame Hay has many marvellous independent shops, bookshops, The Globe, Galleries, etc. Backfold is full of interesting shops….
